Moundville Archaeological Park
Moundville Archaeological Park:
Located on the Black Warrior River, 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park is one of the nation’s best-preserved Native American heritage sites. Ruled by a powerful Mississippian culture chiefdom during the 13th century, Moundville was once the largest city north of Mexico. Here 29 massive flat-topped earthen mounds were constructed to house the city’s leaders and for civic and ceremonial purposes. A tall palisade wall protected the mounds and the large plaza area they surrounded. Moundville was a major metropolis and a center of Mississippian cultural, political, and religious life between AD 1000-AD 1550. Today, the Park’s panoramic landscape provides stunning views of these ancient monuments. The Jones Archaeological Museum displays hundreds of Moundville objects unearthed over the past 100 years, including the famous stone Rattlesnake Disk.
Campground:
Just south of the Mound complex, the Park's campground contains 33 campsites and a renovated bathhouse. Five full hook-up sites provide electricity, water, and sewer; twenty-three standard sites provide electricity and water, and 5 primitive camping sites have shared water access.
RV and tent camping is permitted most of the year, but our bathhouse is closed from Dec.1 through March 1. Only RV's with self-contained facilities are permitted to camp during these months.
The Park's buildings and grounds, including the campground, are closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, Christmas day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. Camping is not permitted during these holidays.
