O'Brien, Oregon 2024: Best Places to Visit - "Tripadvisor."

  • O'Brien, named after John O'Brien, one of the first settlers to arrive at this location, is located at the intersection of Redwood Highway and Lone Mountain Road. The village includes Lone Mountain Resort, a well-stocked O'Brien Country Store and Gas (propane), a friendly staff, and a delicious deli. Also, McGrew's restaurant is right across the street and has live music on the weekends, a superb menu, and a fully stocked bar.
  • The McGrew trail, a favorite of rugged OHVs (off-highway vehicles) and 4X4s, is a legendary track in southern Oregon that straddles the California border. It's roughly 26 miles, runs through lush forest, several creeks and rivers, and begins on Lone Mountain Road! Legend has it that the trail that we now know as McGrew, cut initially by Native Americans, was discovered in 1852 by two sailors from the shipwrecked schooner "Paragon," which went down in a small bay on the Pacific coast.
  • Lone Mountain Resort Park in O'Brien, Oregon, is in the valley of the West Fork of the Illinois River, a tributary of the Rogue River. U.S. Route 199 passes through the community, leading north 7 miles to Cave Junction and 37 miles to Grants Pass, 5 miles south to the California state line, 46 miles to Crescent City and the threshold to the giant Redwoods of California, and 2 Hours from Crater Lake National Park.
  • O'Brien is fast becoming a favorite year-round vacation destination. Here you can enjoy the spectacular beauty of the many rivers, streams, and public forest lands available for hiking, backpacking, camping, rock-hounding, fishing, and hunting.
  • This area is considered the gateway to the Oregon Caves National Monument. It is the cultural center for the rural community of small farms, craftspeople, wineries, and art galleries. Cave Junction is a small city with good restaurants, including the world-famous Taylor's Sausages. It is nestled in the mountains known as the Siskiyou National Forest at an elevation of about 1329 ft. West of O'Brien is the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, much of the virgin timber dating back to the ice age. Sightings of Big Foot have been long reported in these mountains.
